The X-Files and the World Trade Center

The Lone GunmenOn March 4, 2001, the pilot for The Lone Gunmen, a short-lived spin-off of The X-Files, was broadcast over the Fox network. At the end of the episode, the gunmen (a trio of conspiracy hunters who work to uncover various government secrets) discover that there's a secret plot to crash an airplane into the World Trade Center. A video excerpt from the episode, including the aborted crash, can be viewed here. Creepy stuff.

The organization hosting the video (propagandamatrix.com) has adopted, without apparent irony, the conspiratorial mindset of the Lone Gunmen. The gunmen discover that a secret government cabal is actually behind the plot, but they've hidden their involvement by creating a cover story of terrorist attack. Propagandamatrix suggests that fiction, in this case, is not too far from the truth of September 11. Certainly those who have a skeptical view of the Project for the New American Century might find themselves in agreement. (Connoisseurs of '90's action flicks should also revisit The Long Kiss Goodnight for another World Trade Center connection.)

But certainly Fox - of all networks - wouldn't participate in such a conspiracy by canceling the series. Would they?

The truth is out there.
